Opinion: Acid of Hate Eating Away Decency
Once upon a time it was a crime to threaten the life of the president of the United States.
By statute, it still is a crime, in fact a felony.
The past few months, however, have witnessed behavior and speech that flaunts the law.
We have also seen nearly every other standard of decency and respect for the president be eaten away by the acid of hate and disrespect.
The purveyors of moral decay have learned that it takes time for people to become desensitized to previously long-held standards of decency.
Drip, Drip, Drip
As an example, look at the erosion of morality regarding sexual behavior over the past 25 years.
It took a long time for homosexuals to comfortably “come out of the closet” and openly admit their proclivity for sex with a person of the same gender. Years went by as society slowly accepted this as normal behavior. It was accepted, even heralded by some, setting up the next target: marriage.
Accepting homosexuality was not enough. Society was told that homosexuals should be allowed to marry one another, and even argued they had a civil right to marry one another.
The foundation of decency once more was eroded by the acid of disrespect for morality and sacred institutions. Those who believed in God’s design for marriage were accused of closed-mindedness, hate and more.
In time, this pillar also fell, and now America embraces not only the homosexual lifestyle, but the marriage of people of the same sex, too.
Enter the War on Gender
Those intent on further eroding the fiber of moral decency are now waging war on gender.
Instead of patiently waiting, however, they have quickly attached the “T” to the acronym “LGB” and are striking while the iron of acceptance is hot.
Even though it is clear what is a male and what is a female, society is being made to accept the notion that what is in a person’s mind is actually what is reality.
Bolstered by organizations such as the NBA and the NCAA, states like North Carolina and Texas are being bullied for trying stop the erosion.
Armed with money and willing sports media like ESPN, transgenderism is fast becoming accepted as a norm.
What God designed in creation is of no importance. Even the courts are now recognizing transgenderism in things like Title IX, which was never intended to have even the remotest intention to this behavior when it was passed into law.
Erosion of Moral Fiber
Just as the above examples show how time and patience have eroded the moral fiber of our society, the same tactics are being used when it comes to respect and decency for public figures.
Wednesday, June 14, Rep. Steve Scalise was shot playing baseball outdoors in Virginia, and is in critical condition. Scalise was shot along with four others, by James Hodgkinson, who himself was shot and killed.
Hodgkinson, an ardent supporter of Bernie Sanders and of Democratic Socialism wrote on his Facebook page that, “It’s time to destroy Trump and company.”
His support for Sanders is not what is relevant. What is relevant is that Hodgkinson felt safe from enough from criminal prosecution to publicly post that our President must be destroyed.
A few years ago people would have been scared of the Secret Service knocking on their door if they posted such a thing. Unfortunately now, it is becoming commonplace.
Art Imitates Life
A New York theater company enacts a version of Shakespeare’s Julius Cesear with Caesar being killed by an actor that looks remarkably like President Trump.
One has to muse if those putting on the play realize that Shakepeare’s Caesar was not the villain, but instead, the senators who murder him.
Fortunately, at least one major company has pushed back against such disrespect and hate.
On June 11, the USA Today reported, “Delta Air Lines on Sunday said it is pulling its sponsorship from a Manhattan-based theater company for portraying Julius Caesar as a Donald Trump look-alike in a business suit who gets knifed to death on stage.”
‘Resistance’, Violence and Acid of Hate Rhetoric
Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VIrginia) said earlier this year that it is time to, “Take advantage of this tremendous public outcry against the administration.” Kaine urged fighting in the streets as part of how that advantage could be taken.
Former AG Loretta Lynch called for, ‘blood and death‘ in the streets.
In a music video, Snoop shoots Trump in the head.
Prior to the election, Robert DeNiro called Trump a pig and a dog and said that he would like to “punch him in the face.”
But DeNiro isn’t the only celebrity to spew a series of foul insults at Donald Trump.
After Trump was elected, at an alleged women’s rights rally, pop singer Madonna said that she has, “thought a lot about blowing up the White House.”

And in one of the most heinous celebrity acts of disrespect and hate, Kathy Griffin posted a picture of a beheaded Trump, yet some leaders of the Left were silent.
Media Stomps On Moral Compass
Jason Fuller wrote a piece for the Huffington Post that have taken down, “Impeachment Is No Longer Enough; Donald Trump Must Face Justice.”
Fuller wrote that Trump should be tried for treason, found guilty and executed. Yes, executed. And Fuller also advocated the same fate for Sen. Mitch McConnell, Steve Bannon and Rep. Paul Ryan.
Fuller had the audacity to write than anything less than this fate for Trump would mean that America has indeed lost its moral compass.
For someone who had just asserted that the president of the United States and others be executed to talk about a moral compass is beyond belief.
America is losing its moral compass, but it is not because of society not adhering to Fuller’s apparent desire to see the president executed.
The environment that the country is in where a president can be threatened with physical violence and even portrayed as beheaded illustrates graphically that the moral compass is spinning out of control.
Even Wednesday after Scalise was shot, the hate was spewing from the Left, lamenting the he was not hurt worse:

What is happening is beyond political debate and disagreement.
The Left has moved into the realm of advocating harm to our country’s president and others, often simply because of their political affiliation.
Society has absorbed the transition from hate speech that the Left is famous for, to now hate actions that at one time would have spawned outrage across the land.
We are on dangerous ground. Society must check itself and say “Enough!” to those who advocate violence, and who find it fashionable amongst leftists to talk about killing or harming our president.
As with matters of sexual behavior, the Left is patient, willing to let disrespect and the acid of hate slowly eat into the fabric of morality and decency. But, the pace at which violence is being advocated and in Scalise’s case, committed, is alarming.
Most folks still fear saying something akin to harming the President for fear of legal repercussions. Perhaps celebrities and others who have found their words of hate to come with not consequences, are held accountable.
It is never right to advocate harming the president of the United States or other leaders. Society must quickly recommit to this and not allow those who perpetuate such hate to do so with impunity. The acid of hate and disrespect must be stopped.
