According to media reports and the UNC Chapel Hill Police, a man tried to set a tree on fire on the edge of campus.

Around 3:40 p.m. a small device was detonated at the base of Davie Poplar on McCorkle Place. The fire was contained and there is no ongoing threat to campus. UNC Police have taken a suspect into custody. One person suffered non life-threatening injuries and was transported to the hospital.
The campus remains open and is operating as normal. Cameron Ave. remains closed to through traffic between S Columbia St. and Raleigh St.
UNC Police continue to investigate the incident in coordination with local law enforcement.
ABC 11 tweeted out video of the explosion and fire, as well as the police breaching the suspect’s vehicle which was located in Carrboro.

ABC 11 also reported University officials think the suspect is a former student and is being ‘evaluated for mental health issues’.
The suspect starting taking off his clothes as he fled and yelled, “Hail Satan!” The suspect was captured quickly by law enforcement.
