In 2006, Hodgkinson was charged with domestic battery, aggravated discharge of a
firearm and criminal damage to a motor vehicle. The charges were dismissed at a later date, but the police confiscated his shotgun.
According to the Belleville sheriff’s department report, Hodgkinson forced
his way into a neighbor’s home in search of his daughter. While there, he grabbed his daughter by the hair and punched his daughter’s friend in the face.
After the earlier altercation, the boyfriend of the daughter’s friend went to her home to confront her father. The daughter’s boyfriend reported to law enforcement that Mr. Hodgkinson answered the door with a shotgun ‘aimed at his face’ and hit him with it.
According to the Belleville News-Democrat, James Hodgkinson also was arrested for a, “DUI and resisting arrest charge that was dismissed in 1993, for which he received court supervision.”
The Belleville News-Democrat also noted that, “Hodgkinson’s social media was marked by politics; he took part in a protest against income inequality at the Belleville Post Office in 2012 and often wrote letters to the News-Democrat in protest against conservative policies.”
Democratic Socialist according to his Facebook page, which is now no longer active.
His Facebook page made it clear he was a Bernie Sanders Supporter and he was a Bernie Sanders campaign volunteer.
James Hodgkinson’s Facebook Profile Photo, before being taken down, read:
“Democratic Socialism explained in 3 words: ‘We the People’ Since 1776.”

Hodgkinson’s favorite Facebook pages included David Brock’s far-left propaganda outlet, Media Matter for America. Also included were MoveOn.org and the Southern Poverty Law Center.
This is the second shooter to have Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) associated with them.
The first was Floyd Lee Corkins who made a failed attempt at a mass shooting at the Family Research Council in Washington, D.C. on Aug. 15, 2012 . Corkins said he used the SPLC’s “hate map” in selecting his target.
