NCDPI Salaries Mainly Higher Than Classroom Teachers

A look inside the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction’s (NCDPI) salaries has yielded some interesting numbers. With all the talk of raising teacher pay, a look at what levels of compensation for education related non-teaching staff are earning offers some perspective.

The information provided in this article is based on information obtained in July 2016 for current employees.

An analysis of the 1056 salaries within NCDPI show that the overall compensation paid out has a value of $60,680,487. This figure, nor any other of the figures in this article, include the dollar amount for benefits.

The average benefits package for North Carolina State employees can vary, however according to the NC State Human Resources department, the average overall value is $20,417.

If the total benefits amount provided by the NC Department of Human Resources is factored in for all 1056 employees, the dollar value is $21,137,952.

NCDPI’s overall compensation total of $60,680,487 plus benefits of $21,137,952 brings the total to $81,818,439.

The majority of those employed by NCDPI (624 staffers) are earning over $50,000 a year.

Those making $50,000 or more make up 76.04% of all NCDPI salaries.  These salaries have a combined worth of $46,138,598.

Of all salaries over $50,000, the total dollar amount paid out is $46,138,598.  The combined salaries of those making between 0 and $49,000 comes to $14,541,889.

Below is a chart breaking down of the salary range dollar values for all staffers in $10,000 increments. Hovering over any given wedge will show the dollar totals rounded to the nearest dollar.

The largest group are those making between $70,000 and $79,000 a year, which translates to 20.44% of all NCDPI salaries. The combined worth of these salaries is $14,497,964.

The second largest group are those making between $60 and $69,000 per year. These salaries make up 11.74% of all NCDPI salaries and are worth a total of $8,328,739.

The chart below displays then number of staffers in each $10,000 salary range.

Hovering over any given wedge will display the number of employees earning salaries in that given range.

The largest group are again those making between $70,000 and $79,000 a year. The number of employees in this range is 195.

The second largest group are those making between $20 and $29,000 per year. The number of employees in this range is 165.

A review of all staffers at DPI showed that the department is female dominated with 771 women making up 73.01% of all NCDPI staff.

There are only 285 men working for NCDPI, which translates to 26.99%.

A few more numbers to consider are the average salaries broken out into $10,000 blocks as pictured below.

Hovering over any given range will yield the average salary amount for the range selected. For example, in the over $100,000 range the average salary is $116,936. Conversely, the lowest paid range (0-$19,000) has an average salary of $17,272.
