A defamation suit against the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) has been filed by D. Kennedy Ministries (DJKM). The suit also names Amazon and it’s program, Amazon Smile, as well as Guidestar as defendants.

The lawsuit alleges that the SPLC illegally used and spread false and misleading descriptions of the services offered by DJKM.  The suit accuses the SPLC of defamation and discrimination towards DJKM on the basis of their religious beliefs.

According to a press release, the suit says the SPLC committed defamation against DJKM “arising from the publication and distribution of false information that libels the ministry’s reputation and subjects the ministry to disgrace, ridicule, odium, and contempt in the estimation of the public.”

The defamation suit specifically mentions the SPLC’s “Hate map”, of which DJKM has been labeled as “anti-LGBT.”  Amazon Smile cut off services to DJKM on the basis of  the SPLC listing the ministry’s services as “ineligible”.

Guidestar began using the SPLC “hate map” to update profiles and mark organizations accordingly in their monthly automated reporting. Amazon and Amazon Smile utilize these Guidestar reports.

D. Kennedy Ministries asserts the defamation suit that the Southern Poverty Law Center’s criteria for listing them as a hate group was that they ‘espouse and support Biblical morals and principles concerning human sexuality’.

In a statement, Dr. Frank Wright, President & Chief Executive Officer at DJKM, stated that, “We embarked today on a journey to right a terrible wrong. Those who knowingly label Christian ministries as ‘hate’ groups, solely for subscribing to the historic Christian faith, are either woefully uninformed or willfully deceitful. In the case of the Southern Poverty Law Center, our lawsuit alleges the latter.”

“These false and illegal characterizations have a chilling effect on the free exercise of religion and on religious free speech for all people of faith,” Wrights statement continued.

“After having given the SPLC an opportunity to retract, we have undertaken this legal action, seeking a trial by a jury of our peers, to preserve our own rights under the law and to defend the religious free speech rights of all Americans,” concluded Wright.
