A UNC Charlotte Associate Professor was charged late last month with several counts of exploitation of a minor.
Charlotte Mecklenburg Police reports state that Dr. Robert Lewis Herman-Smith was taken into custody and charged with three counts of 2nd degree child exploitation and three counts of 3rd degree child exploitation.
According to police, an investigation had begun back in June, which was looking into an “exchange of illegal pornographic material on the internet.” The investigation led to a search warrant being issued for Herman-Smith’s home, located in Matthews, North Carolina.
The UNC Charlotte made a brief statement:
“UNC Charlotte has just been made aware of the arrest and is currently reviewing the charges. In the meantime, Robert Herman-Smith is being immediately suspended from the University.”
According to Herman-Smith’s profile at UNC Charlotte, he joined the school in 2008 and was an Associate Professor and the MSW Program Director at UNC Charlotte’s School of Social Work.
Herman-Smith was also the “Early Childhood Mental Health Certificate Coordinator” and the “NC Child Welfare Collaborative Site Coordinator”. It has been learned that in these roles, Herman-Smith has been working with children as young as the age of 5.
Herman-Smith was issued a $30,000 bond on October 27th and was released on the same day. The case has apparently been transferred from Charlotte Police to the Department of Homeland Security.
